A Van Full of Fireworks

éS Spring 2006
Coast-to-Coast Filming Mission
April 14 - May 4, 2006.

Personnel: Rick McCrank, Justin Eldridge, Cale Nuske, Nyjah Huston, Silas Baxter-Neal, Bobby Worrest, Mike Barker, filmers Scuba Steve and Mike Manzoori, photographers Atiba Jefferson (first half) and Joe Brook (second half) and éS Team Manager Jay Maldonado. Rodrigo Tx. and P.J. Ladd stayed home to get work done for Flip and Plan B respectively.

Vehicles: Two vans, a seven passenger and 15 passenger.

Stops: Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville, St. Louis, Kansas City, Denver and Salt Lake City. We spent about two days in each city, and about five or six days in Denver, because it's such a good place to skate.

McCrank signs his life away at the Skatepark of Tampa.

The éS Spring 2006 coast-to-coast filming mission started off with a bang at a Skatepark of Tampa demo. The éS team took full advantage of the opportunity. Barker’s switch 360 flip down the double set, McCrank’s 180 nose grind, K grind and backside tail to fakie all on the vert wall were just a few tricks that wowed the crowd. Since it was also filmer Mike Manzoori’s birthday, the whole team joined SPoT heads Brian Schaefer, Ryan Clements and Barak Wiser and painted the town red in celebration of Mike and the demo.

Cale hoists some fireworks.

Clockwise from top left: Jay rides shotgun. Orange cliffs. Justin and Barker in Tampa. McCrank and Scuba.

We then worked our way up North and back out West. The whole trip was pretty much just skate, skate, skate. Fireworks are legal and for sale in little roadside shacks across middle America, so most of the éS riders could be found setting them off quite often. Cale and Justin often shot roman candles at each other at spots, which was pretty annoying, because you don't want to draw attention to your filming missions. A few burned T-shirts definitely showed up in the mix.

The boys set-up a sweet shot.

Despite all the pyrotechnics, the entire trip was nearly hassle-free. We only got kicked out of one or two spots the whole time, which was amazing considering the amount of time we were on the road and all the cities we hit. One time, a cop who used to skate showed up and just watched.

The works.

Clockwise from top left: On the road again. Rick plays drums. Tailgate party. Manzoori films.

Another time, we were setting off fireworks at this one spot at 3:00 in the morning, when a cop came up and said he had received a complaint. We just said, "I don’t know what you're talking about," even though we had just finished blowing up a lot of stuff pretty far away from the spot, so we wouldn’t distract the dudes from skating. It was so funny--the van was full of fireworks.

Nashville alley.

In Tennessee, we skated Bobby's friend's mini-ramp, which was waterlogged at the time, so it was kind of soft and slow. But it was fun, and everyone killed it anyway. Later on, Rick, Barker and Scuba had a jam session inside the house.

Kansas City lurkers.

Clockwise from top left: Mike Barker reflects on the day's activities. Heavy skies. Bobby and Justin are two ramblin', gamblin' men. Little America.

At one point, we were driving down the street at 3:00 in the morning and saw three dudes all bundled up, sleeping parallel to each other in the middle of the sidewalk--not even in a nook or anything. That was pretty odd.

Justin shoots some hoops.

Sean Malto of Girl met us in Kansas City and was kind enough to show us around. Big-ups to him. Then one of the vans broke down in Lawrence, Kansas. I checked into a hotel for two days and got it fixed while the rest of the dudes drove on to Denver. That night, it started to rain really hard and there was a blackout.

Mike Manzoori and Joe Brook.

Clockwise from top left: Hoody Manzoori. Kicking crew. Justin iPods it. Luggage.

Joe Brook and Nyjah met us in Denver. Atiba had to go home and Silas went to film in Japan for éS and Habitat. In Salt Lake City, we met up with this really big personality named the Lizard King. He showed us a good time all around town. We got some more filming done then drove straight home from there.

On the road again, take two.

Clockwise from top left: Head out on the highway. Cale signs at SPoT. Hanging with randoms. Jamming.

All in all, it was a really productive trip. Most of the dudes got a lot of footy. Everyone was just stoked about skating and hitting up spots. The weather was good, considering the time of year. A lot of time, we'd barely miss the bad weather. Basically, we were traveling West while the bad weather was heading East. We got so close a couple of times, we high-fived the bad weather.

Well, I guess that's about it. Thanks for reading, and keep an eye out for the YéS! video from éS Footwear, coming soon to a screen near you.
