éS Game of SKATE New York City Report

New York is a city full of skateboarders and amazing skate spots, but it’s not too often that a large number of New York skaters converge in one place. The éS Game of SKATE crew is proud to have been the cause for three of these large gatherings over the last few years, and each year, the New York Games have been the biggest on the tour. On Friday, July 14, 2006, for the first time ever, we had to turn skaters away—there were simply too many!

We’ve always had this rule that anyone who is at the spot by start time would get in the contest, but even with that rule, we’ve still managed to accommodate every kid who wanted in who’s been on-site before we started the second round. But this time? There were 180 skaters in the first line, and we let another 44 in before we finally had to stop signing kids up and actually start the contest.

It was great to see some of the kids who have entered the éS Game of SKATE over the last few years again. Kids like Amadeus Thaikovsky, Taylor Walls, Taji Ameen, Alex Polska, Aaron Weber, Jon Budinoff and Matt Zicopula all continue to get better each time we see them!

As usual, some of the Games were painful and some were amazing. I thought it was pretty funny that there was this group of skaters who kept on yelling at, intimidating and heckling every kid that their friends skated against. It seems really jockish to me, sort of like football players do. And then they started chanting “Not a trick! Not a trick!” every time someone did a one-footed Ollie, a pressure flip or a flip trick with a late pivot. They were nothing short of the kind of bullies that belong in the gym, not on the sideline at a skateboard contest.

Despite their bad vibes, things kept flowing, and the éS Game of SKATE continued until we had a top seven, who all skated in the Finals. Young Nathan Rojas was quiet and shy and let his skating do all the talking. He ended up in 7th. Jason Kinzell landed himself in 6th. Tim Wynn and Kyle DeBernardi are no stranger to éS Game of SKATE Finals: both have been there before, and this year Tim ended up in 5th and Kyle got 4th. James Reres, Jason Sanders and Jimmy McDonald battled it out for the top spot, but in the end it was 5Boro’s all-terrain ripper Jimmy McDonald who took 1st, and he’ll be a great representative for New York in San Diego--even though he lives in Philly!--Mark Waters

  11. I would've beat those kids' asses. No joke. Even if the eS guys kicked me out, I know on the inside they'd be like,"Good job man, those dicks deserved it."
