For the éS Game of SKATE in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Friday, July 21, 2006, our partner was Duh! Skateshop and Skatepark, and in keeping with the tradition of Southern hospitality, our hosts were very gracious. Upon arriving and setting up, we were greeted cordially by 72 amped-up and sweaty skaters. Another Southern tradition is the sweaty indoor skatepark, and Duh! kept that one very much alive!
Fortunately, the well-stocked skate shop was air-conditioned, so relief was close-by. You know, something always stands out at every good éS Game of SKATE, whether good or bad. In New York, it was the lame hecklers, in Philadelphia it was Matt Willigan and some other folks pitching in unexpectedly with shirts to mop up the rain and keep it from ruining the Finals.
In Fayetteville, what stood out most was the crowd and the noise they made when they were cheering for tricks. It was, by far, the most appreciative crowd of any of the Games this year—they were really rambunctious and energetic, and it was ideal for a skateboarding contest.
A bunch of kids were ripping throughout the day, and in the end it came down to Casey Stewart, Corey Vreeland, David Chayko, and David Bartlett. The four-man Final went pretty quickly, with local favorites Corey V. and David Chayko battling it out.
Mr. Chayko took the top spot, though, and will be going to San Diego with his new Boost Mobile i875 phone! Thanks to Terry and the entire Duh! crew, and to everyone who showed us that Southern hospitality—it was much needed, and was very much appreciated.--Mark Waters
