éS Game of SKATE Las Vegas, Nevada Report

Presented by Boost Mobile.

After about two weeks at home after the éS Game of SKATE Tour, we were all itchin’ to get back in the van and hit the road, and when Las Vegas is the destination, it’s always a little sweeter than most other places. So, we arrived on Wednesday, August 9, 2006 and checked into the Mandalay Bay, allegedly the home of the best pool in Vegas. Well, we took a swim to avoid the 100-degree heat, and although the wave pool was fun, give me the Hard Rock any day.

After gathering our stuff, we headed to the skatepark, where the Pharmacy boys had set us up in a great spot for the éS Game of SKATE. Donny and the Pharmacy crew had held Games in this spot, which was sort of an abandoned tennis court, a couple times before, so we figured it would be no sweat. And it was, until we were about three-quarters of the way through the tournament, when Las Vegas’ worst showed up in their blues.

The leader cop was not just a mental midget, but was almost too short to be a cop, I’d bet. This policeman had the biggest small man’s complex I’ve ever witnessed. We weren’t hurting a thing, we weren’t bothering a soul--it was just a gathering of kids who had something to do. We were skateboarding at a skatepark. But nothing is ever good enough for a little Napoleon, and this guy just was letting us have it.

While he waited for his backup to arrive, we kept hammering through the Quarter-Finals. We’d started with 122 skaters and whittled it down to about 16 when the police showed up, and we somehow managed to get through until there were four skaters left. At this point, the police came in and threatened to arrest me unless I shut it down right then and there. I promptly told everyone they had to leave, and suggested they go skate the stuff in the skatepark.

Well, of course that was a mistake, I quickly learned, because the police suddenly decided that the skatepark was going to close two hours early. How fun it must be to have a job tearing things down and destroying them. It's hard to believe that there weren’t much more serious issues going on somewhere else for the cops to take care of.

Because we had the quick-thinking éS Game of SKATE and Pharmacy crews on-hand, we outsmarted the cops and moved the Finals to the Pharmacy parking lot, where Andrew Smith edged out Pharmacy local Keelan Dadd, barely. He will be going to San Diego with his new Boost Mobile i875 phone! Thanks to Doug and Donny and the Pharmacy boys, and thanks to Jermaine for the photos. See you at ASR, boys!--Mark Waters

  3. Dumb bitch ass cops. While those swines were shutting down a peaceful game of skate they could have been solving real crime.
